eznpc Why You Cannot Cube a 4 Socket Crystal Sword

At some point in Diablo II: Resurrected, you end up hovering over a Crystal Sword and doing the mental math: "Can I just cube this into the sockets I want?" If you're also bouncing between games and checking a diablo 4 item shop on the side, it's easy to assume the Cube works like a flexible crafting bench. It doesn't. Once a Crystal Sword already has sockets—four, or any number—the Horadric Cube won't add more, won't reroll them, and won't "upgrade" the hole count. Socketing is basically a one-way door.

What The Cube Actually Allows

The well-known socket recipe (Ral + Amn + Perfect Amethyst) only applies to a plain white, unsocketed weapon. That detail matters. The moment your sword drops with sockets, the recipe is dead on arrival. You can toss the runes in, hit Transmute, and nothing useful happens. People keep trying anyway because it feels like it should work, but D2R's rules are strict: no recipe exists to increase sockets on an already-socketed base.

Getting Four Sockets Without The Headache

If you're building Spirit, the cleanest play is to start with the right kind of Crystal Sword, not the right kind of hope. Item level is the hidden gatekeeper here. A white Crystal Sword from the Normal Secret Cow Level tends to land in that sweet range where the maximum sockets it can ever get is four. Take that exact kind of unsocketed sword to Larzuk in Act V and use the socket quest reward—he'll punch in the maximum allowed, which in this case is four. No guessing. No "almost." It just works.

When You Want To Gamble Instead

If you don't want to spend Larzuk on a common base, the Cube can still be your budget option—just understand the roll. The recipe doesn't "choose four." It rolls a random socket count, and then the game clamps it to whatever the item can legally have. That's why Normal Cow Crystal Swords are popular: even if the Cube tries to hand you five or six, the cap forces it back down. You're still taking a chance, though. Sometimes you'll get one, two, or three, and that's the end of that sword.

Common Mistakes And The Only "Reset" You Get

The trap a lot of players fall into is thinking there's a fix for a bad socket count. There isn't. A 3-socket Crystal Sword won't become a 4-socket later, and a 4-socket won't reroll into something else. You can remove what's inside with the Hel + Town Portal trick, but the sockets themselves stay put forever. If you need a different base, you farm a new one—simple, annoying, and very Diablo. And if you'd rather save time on the wider grind, some folks also lean on marketplaces for gear and currency; that's where eznpc comes up as an option for players looking to buy items or top up resources without another long farming session.
