Japan Freight and Logistics Industry: A Sector in Transformation
The Japan freight and logistics industry is a vast and essential sector, encompassing all modes of transportation and logistics services. It is currently undergoing a significant transformation driven by regulatory reform, technological disruption, and shifting market demands. The total market for 15 logistics sectors was valued at 24.794 trillion yen in FY2024 and is expected to continue growing, reaching 26.361 trillion yen in FY2026 .
The industry is navigating a complex set of challenges and opportunities. The revision of logistics laws, including the Logistics Efficiency Law and two trucking optimization laws, is promoting fair freight rates and requiring all stakeholders to improve efficiency and reduce costs . These changes are shifting logistics from being seen as an on-site cost to a managerial investment . Digitalization, particularly the adoption of AI and data analytics for route optimization and real-time tracking, is a core trend [citation:MRFR].
The driver shortage remains the most significant structural challenge. Four out of five carriers report open positions . This is forcing the industry to innovate, with investments in automation, robotics, and new business models like shared freight platforms . The focus on sustainability is also intensifying, with a push for green logistics, modal shift, and CO₂ reduction [citation:MRFR].
