Helium Gas Production: Sourcing from Natural Gas and Air Separation Plants

Helium gas production is a critical and complex process, with the vast majority of the world's helium supply derived from natural gas processing, while air separation plants represent a smaller but emerging source. Natural Gas is the dominant source, accounting for a significant proportion of the helium supply due to its abundant presence and established extraction methods [citation:MRFR]. Air Separation Plants, though currently smaller in terms of market share, are gaining traction as advancements in technology improve their efficiency and production capabilities, making them an attractive alternative for helium extraction [citation:MRFR]. However, the atmospheric concentration of helium on Earth is only about 5 ppm, making extraction from air economically impractical .

Helium is produced as a byproduct of natural gas extraction, with concentrations typically ranging from 0.05% to 7% depending on the geological formation. The helium is separated from the natural gas stream through a series of cryogenic distillation processes, which exploit helium's extremely low boiling point to condense and remove other gases. The United States is the largest producer of helium, accounting for 42.6% of global output, with significant production facilities and key players like Air Products and Chemicals Inc and Praxair Inc [citation:MRFR]. Qatar ranks second with 33.2%, making the two countries responsible for more than three-quarters of global production . Other producers include Russia (9.5%), Algeria (5.8%), Canada (3.2%), China (1.6%), and Poland (1.6%) .

The increasing demand for helium and the finite nature of natural gas reserves are driving interest in alternative sources. Recent geopolitical disruptions, such as the damage to Qatar's Ras Laffan facility, which could take 3–5 years to repair, have exposed the fragility of the current supply chain and the need for diversification . By 2035, the helium production landscape is expected to evolve, with continued focus on maximizing extraction efficiency from natural gas and exploring new and sustainable sources to meet the growing global demand [citation:MRFR]. However, EU sanctions on Russian helium and the dominance of U.S. and Qatari production mean that supply will remain concentrated for the foreseeable future .
