Why is the Tulip Tree Known as the Tree of Many Names?

Many people who often grow a Tulip plant or are even known for a Tulip Tree know that it has often been regarded as the Tree of Many Names. The tree is also celebrated in literature, as you will find it in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. However, while this fact is known to many people, they are not familiar with its different names and why it is called the same.

Planted by George Washington, the tree was not native to America. Now the main name that is used for the tree is Tulip Poplar, scientifically known as Liriodendron tulipifera, but you will also come across other names such as American tulip tree, fiddletiree, whitewood, canonewood, tulip tree, yellow-poplar, and lynn-tree. This guide aims to tell you more about this wonderful tree that you will find in large parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Overview and History of Tulip Trees

Tulip poplars are one of our most impressive trees. Despite its name (s), it isn’t really a true poplar at all, at least not in a strict sense. It sits in the Magnoliaceae family, so it’s less “tulip” and more magnolia, kind of. It’s also distinguished by a plethora of features that are, honestly, nothing short of amazing.

Back in the Cretaceous period (143.1 to 66 million years ago), the genus (Liriodendron) included several species, and it was widely spread across North America and Europe. Remains are also reported from Tertiary rocks, which are volcanic rocks formed in the Tertiary period, roughly from 66 million to 2.6 million years ago. So, yes, it has a long, persistent history.

Characteristics and Uses of Tulip Trees

Tulip trees were used by Native Americans for large dugout canoes, and also for other construction projects, like practical stuff that mattered. People basically made good use of the wood when it was available.

These trees are among the tallest in eastern North America. A tree that’s only 15 years old may reach about 40 feet. By maturity, they’re normally in the range of 70 to 100 feet tall. But one specimen in North Carolina, The Fork Ridge Tulip Tree, has been measured at 191 feet, 10 inches. That means it’s considered the tallest tulip tree ever.

Tulip trees grow fast, often two feet or more per year if conditions are good: adequate water, fertile and well-drained soil, full sun, and enough space, basically. Their average life span is about 200 to 250 years, although some individuals have been documented living to 500 years, give or take.

Advantages of a Tulip Tree

For wildlife, they’re pretty beneficial. Think of seeds that feed birds and small mammals, plus leaves that certain caterpillars eat (including the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly). Also, their branching pattern, with multiple branches, creates solid nesting sites for birds and squirrels.

Their leaves are pretty easy to recognize too. Each leaf has four lobes and is heart-shaped, truncate, or slightly wedge-shaped at the base. The alternate leaves are simple, pinnately veined, and are around five to six inches. Additionally, the flowers of this tree produce enough nectar that bees constantly surround the tree. The honey produced by bees using Tulip poplar is highly recognised by beekeepers.
