Cloud-native IGA platforms offer faster time-to-value, lower upfront costs, and a predictable subscription-based pricing model, which makes them far more accessible to the mid-market and smaller enterprises that were previously priced out. For large enterprises, it offloads the burden of managing complex infrastructure and ensures they are always on the latest version of the software. This cloud-first trend also means that modern IGA platforms are built with API-first architectures, making it much easier to connect to the thousands of SaaS applications that businesses use today. This ability to easily integrate with and govern access to a sprawling ecosystem of cloud services is a critical capability that legacy on-premise systems struggle to provide, making the shift to cloud-based IGA an almost inevitable trend for any organization with a hybrid or multi-cloud strategy.

Another profoundly transformative trend is the infusion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) into the core of IGA platforms. Traditionally, IGA has relied on static, rule-based policies and manual reviews by business managers. AI and ML are making this process far more intelligent and automated. For example, AI can analyze a user's attributes, their department, and the access patterns of their peers to automatically recommend the appropriate set of initial permissions, a concept known as "role mining." These include service accounts used by applications to communicate with each other, API keys that grant access to data, and the digital identities of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) bots and other automated systems. These non-human identities often have highly privileged access, yet they are frequently poorly managed and tracked, making them a prime target for attackers. Leading IGA vendors are now extending their platforms to discover, manage, and govern the entire lifecycle of these machine identities. This includes tracking ownership, rotating credentials automatically, and including their entitlements in access certification reviews. This expansion of governance to cover every identity—human and machine—is a critical step towards achieving a truly comprehensive and holistic view of access risk across the entire enterprise, a trend that is becoming increasingly important as automation and interconnectivity accelerate.
