All 10 of Deckard Cain's journals in Diablo 4 must be read before returning to Cain at the Imperial Library to access Deckard's Memory. The journals are scattered across Sanctuary, but exact pickup locations and a fixed collection order are not established for this route. Unlike D4 Gold, journal completion is a progression requirement rather than a currency expense.

Finish the Story and Reserve Your Entry Materials

Complete the seasonal questline before spending Prime Evil Splinters. For the Season 15 route, patch 3.2.3 prevents their use before story completion because early consumption could block progression.

Prime Evil Splinters are ingredients for Wirt's Lucky Coins, the material used at the Tristram fountain. Reserve one Splinter of Terror from Diablo, one Splinter of Destruction from Baal, and one Splinter of Hatred from Mephisto before spending spare materials on power changes.

Do not confuse these ingredients with socketable Soul Splinter gems. Those gems occupy jewelry slots and have a separate upgrade system; they cannot replace the three named ingredients in the Horadric Cube.

Read All 10 Journals and Open the Tristram Route

Read every journal before returning to Cain; merely reaching the material requirement does not complete the journal requirement. The supported route establishes the following sequence, not a verified location list for the individual journals.

Finish the seasonal questline before using Prime Evil Splinters.
Collect a Splinter of Terror from Diablo, a Splinter of Destruction from Baal, and a Splinter of Hatred from Mephisto.
Use the Horadric Cube to transmute one of each ingredient into Wirt's Lucky Coins.
Find and read all 10 of Deckard Cain's journals across Sanctuary. Do not treat an unread journal as completed.
Return to the Imperial Library and speak with Deckard Cain.
Enter the dark blue portal named Deckard's Memory.
Go to the fountain in central Tristram with Wirt's Lucky Coins and make a wish.
Enter the red portal labeled "" and defeat the three Prime Evil echoes together.

The interaction path is Imperial Library, Deckard Cain, Deckard's Memory, central Tristram fountain, then the red portal. There is no supported journal-menu path or individual pickup map here, so avoid substituting invented coordinates for the missing location details.

Confirm Each Unlock Before Spending More Coins

The dark blue Deckard's Memory portal confirms access to Tristram. The red "" portal confirms access to the boss encounter; these are separate progression checks.

If the blue portal is missing, recheck story completion and whether all 10 journals were actually read before returning to Cain. If the fountain consumes coins without opening the red portal, stop interacting with it and record the missing portal and material loss.

The Standard of Heroes is a quest item from the encounter, not the Hellfire Torch. The Hellfire Torch is the associated Mythic Charm, while the Standard's practical secondary use remains unconfirmed for this route. Keep the Standard without assuming it grants an equipment bonus or has a hidden exchange.

Avoid Repeat-Run and Combat Waste

A completed encounter does not guarantee another immediate equipment payout. The Prime Evil Council has a loot cooldown, but its duration is not established; receiving only the Standard of Heroes does not prove that your journal progress failed.

Prepare for Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto together rather than three separate fights. Check that your damage and resource sustain work without regular enemy kills, and keep a movement option available for overlapping attacks.

Next, check your three named Splinters, finish reading any remaining journals, and return to Cain at the Imperial Library. Keep any consideration of Diablo 4 Gold for sale separate from this checklist: currency does not replace the journal requirement, seasonal story completion, or Wirt's Lucky Coins.
