Checking an APK's SHA-256 Checksum Before You Install

To check an APK's SHA-256 checksum, you run one built-in command on the downloaded file and compare the long string it prints with the value the publisher lists. If every character matches, the file you hold is byte-for-byte the file they described. If even one character differs, stop and do not open it.

That is the whole idea. The rest of this guide covers the exact commands on Windows and macOS, how to read the result, and the limits of what a match can tell you. evo33 apk

What is a SHA-256 checksum, in plain terms?

A checksum is a fingerprint for a file's contents. SHA-256 is one recipe for making that fingerprint, and it always produces 64 hexadecimal characters.

Microsoft's documentation for Get-FileHash explains the useful property: renaming a file leaves its hash unchanged, while altering a single character inside it produces a different hash. So the name on the download tells you nothing. The fingerprint tells you about the bytes.

The same page notes that MD5 and SHA1 are no longer treated as secure against deliberate tampering. If a publisher only offers an MD5 value, treat the comparison as a check for a broken download, not as protection against a swapped file.

Where do you find the value to compare against?

You need a reference hash from the people who built the file. Look on the developer's own release notes, download page or changelog. Some open-source projects publish a hash beside every release, and Microsoft's own example compares a downloaded package against the SHA-256 printed on its GitHub release page.

If no hash is published anywhere, you have nothing to compare. Computing a hash on its own proves nothing; it only becomes useful next to a value someone else committed to in advance.

How do you compute SHA-256 on Windows?

Windows gives you two built-in routes. Use whichever you find easier.

Option A: PowerShell (Get-FileHash)

1.      Open the Start menu, type PowerShell and open it.

2.      Type `Get-FileHash`, a space, then drag the APK from File Explorer into the window so its full path appears.

3.      Press Enter. SHA-256 is the default algorithm, so you do not need to name it. You can add `-Algorithm SHA256` if you want to be explicit.

4.      Read the line labelled Hash. That is your 64-character value.

Option B: Command Prompt (certutil)

5.      Open Command Prompt.

6.      Type `certutil -hashfile`, a space, the path to the APK, a space, then `SHA256`.

7.      Press Enter and copy the long string printed under the file name.

Microsoft's certutil reference lists `-hashfile` as the option that generates and displays a cryptographic hash over a file.

How do you compute SHA-256 on a Mac?

macOS ships with a tool called `shasum`. One detail catches people out: its default is SHA-1, so you must ask for SHA-256 by name.

8.      Open Terminal (Applications, then Utilities).

9.      Type `shasum -a 256`, a space, then drag the APK into the window.

10.  Press Enter. The first block of characters on the output line is the hash; the file name follows it.

The shasum reference on SS64 lists `-a 256` as the switch for SHA-256 and also describes a `--check` mode for verifying a list of saved hashes in one go.

How should you compare the two strings?

Do not eyeball the first and last few characters. Paste both values into a text editor on separate lines, one under the other, and scan them in full. Upper and lower case do not matter here, because hexadecimal letters mean the same thing either way. PowerShell prints capitals and `shasum` prints lowercase, and both are fine.

If you use PowerShell, you can let the computer do the comparison. Store the published value in quotes and test it with `-eq` against the `.Hash` property of the result; you get True or False.

What does a matching checksum NOT prove?

This is the part most guides skip. A match tells you one thing only: the file on your device is identical to the file the hash was made from. It says nothing about whether that file is honest, whether the publisher is trustworthy, or whether the app does what it claims.

Think about where the hash came from. If the download link and the hash sit on the same page, anyone who could swap the file could also swap the hash. A matching pair from a single untrusted page proves very little. The value is strongest when it comes from a separate, independent channel you already trust.

Say you are reading a third-party write-up such as the guide page about the evo33 apk for Android in Nepal: the same two questions apply to any page like it, namely whether a hash is listed at all, and who wrote that hash down. For transparency, that site describes itself as an independent affiliate site, separate from EVO33, and says it may earn a commission.

A checksum also does not replace Android's own signature checks, does not scan for malware, and does not make an app legal where you live.

FAQ

Is SHA-256 better than MD5 for checking a download? Yes. Microsoft's documentation says MD5 and SHA1 should only be used for simple change detection, not for files that need protection from tampering.

My hash does not match. What now? Delete the file and do not install it. Download again from the original source, then recompute; if it still differs, assume something is wrong.

Can I check a hash on my phone? Some file-manager apps can display one, but the desktop commands above are built into the operating system and need no extra download.

18+ and local law

Gambling apps are for adults aged 18 and over only. According to a Law Firm Nepal summary, online gambling is illegal in Nepal under Section 125 of the Muluki Criminal Code 2074, so check the current law before anything else. If you would like to talk to someone, TPO Nepal runs a toll-free helpline on 1660 010 2005 (every day, 9 AM–5 PM) offering general psychosocial counselling rather than a gambling-specific service.
