Electric Heating Appliances: Driving the Electrification of Heat
Electric heating appliances represent a fast-growing and increasingly important segment of the heating appliances market, driven by the global transition away from fossil fuel-based heating and the growing availability of renewable electricity. These products offer a clean, efficient, and increasingly cost-effective alternative to gas and oil heating, aligning with decarbonization goals and consumer preferences for sustainable home comfort.
The demand for electric heaters is surging due to the global shift toward decarbonization and electrified process heating. In India alone, the total market opportunity for electrifiable heating solutions during FY2026E-FY2031E is projected at INR 27,392 Cr, with new CAPEX-led demand and replacement demand contributing to roughly equal measure. The market is expected to be dominated by heaters, which account for approximately INR 13,696 Cr (50%) of the total. The market is forecast to grow from USD 13.2 billion in CY2025 to USD 18.9 billion in CY2030E, translating to an approximate CAGR driven by continued demand for process heating in energy-intensive industries.
The electric heating appliance segment encompasses a wide range of products, including electric resistance heaters, infrared heaters, fan heaters, convection heaters, and electric boilers. These products are used for space heating in residential and commercial buildings, as well as for process heating in industrial applications such as petrochemicals, oil and gas, food and beverage, and pharmaceuticals. Electric process heaters hold the largest share in industrial applications due to their widespread adoption in continuous, high-precision applications.
The smart electric heater market represents a particularly dynamic growth area, with the market expected to grow from $1.88 billion in 2025 to $2.11 billion in 2026 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.2%, and to $3.34 billion in 2030 at a CAGR of 12.1%. The integration of smart controls, IoT connectivity, and energy management features is enabling precise control and optimization of electric heating systems, enhancing user convenience and energy efficiency.
The electrification of heat is being driven by several factors. The declining cost of renewable electricity, particularly from solar and wind generation, is making electric heating increasingly competitive with fossil fuel alternatives. Government policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions and phasing out fossil fuel heating are creating strong incentives for electric heating adoption. The growing availability of heat pumps, which are significantly more efficient than electric resistance heaters, is further accelerating the electrification of heat.
The electric heating appliance segment is being shaped by technological advancements in heating elements, controls, and system integration. The development of high-efficiency electric resistance elements, including ceramic and PTC (positive temperature coefficient) heating elements, is improving performance and safety. The integration of electric heating with renewable energy systems, including solar photovoltaic and battery storage, is creating new opportunities for self-consumption and energy independence.
Key players in the electric heating appliance market include Honeywell International Inc., LG Corporation, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Panasonic Corporation, Haier Electronics Group Co. Ltd., Carrier Global Corporation, and Electrolux AB. These companies are investing in product development to enhance energy efficiency, safety, and smart connectivity, positioning themselves to capture growth in the rapidly evolving electric heating market.
