Polyisocyanurate Insulation Foam: High-Performance Fire and Thermal Protection
Polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation foam represents a premium and rapidly growing segment of the flame retardant foams and insulation market, offering superior fire performance and thermal efficiency compared to conventional polyurethane foams. PIR foam is a closed-cell foam insulation that provides exceptional thermal resistance and inherent fire resistance due to its cross-linked chemical structure.
The global polyisocyanurate (PIR) boardstock foam market was estimated at USD 1,988.0 million in 2025 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.40% during the forecast period. Another analysis values the global PIR boardstock foam market at USD 5.82 billion in 2025, projected to grow from USD 6.21 billion in 2026 to reach USD 9.45 billion by 2034, exhibiting a CAGR of 5.4%. The global PIR insulation foam panels market was estimated at USD 2,342.5 million in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.45%.
PIR insulation foam is produced by reacting isocyanates with polyols in the presence of catalysts and flame retardants, creating a polymer with a higher ratio of isocyanate to polyol than polyurethane. This chemical structure imparts greater thermal stability and fire resistance, with PIR foams often achieving Class B or higher fire ratings. The material’s closed-cell structure provides excellent moisture resistance and long-term thermal performance, making it ideal for roofing, wall insulation, and cold storage applications.
Recent industry developments include BASF’s 2023 launch of next-generation PIR boards with 10% improved thermal performance. Leading players like Kingspan Group, Recticel, and Armacell continue to expand their production capacities to meet rising global demand. The global PIR foam board market is experiencing significant growth due to stringent energy efficiency standards in construction, which mandate high-performance insulation materials that reduce energy consumption while meeting fire safety requirements.
The PIR insulation foam segment is benefiting from the growing emphasis on building energy efficiency and the increasing adoption of high-performance insulation in commercial and industrial construction. As fire safety regulations tighten and energy codes become more demanding, PIR foam is well-positioned to capture a growing share of the flame retardant insulation market.
