U4GM How to Solve Diablo 4 Keeping the Old Traditions Quest
I've logged plenty of hours in Diablo 4 chasing loot and renown, but the little "blink and you'll miss it" puzzles are what keep me poking into every corner. If you're the same way, keep a bit of room in your route for Diablo 4 gold chatter and the odd detour, because Keeping the Old Traditions is one of those quests that doesn't feel like a checklist. It starts quietly in the Dry Steppes and, for once, the game doesn't hold your hand.
Finding the clue
Head into the Untamed Scarps area and look for a book sitting out in the dirt called The Lonely Offering. It's easy to ride right past it, especially if you're sprinting between events. Click it and you won't get a neat "go here, kill that" objective. You get a riddle instead: a line about being timeworn, standing before "colorful kin," and saying "Yes" to keeping traditions. That's the whole setup, and it's kind of great because it makes you stop and actually read.
Following the marker
After the book, a blue marker nudges you toward the Valley of the Strayed. When you arrive, you'll see a weathered statue jammed into a rock face like it's been forgotten on purpose. No interact prompt. No glowing outline. Most people I know do the same thing here: circle the statue, click around, maybe assume it's bugged. Don't. The solution isn't a hidden switch, it's you doing something in plain sight.
The emote that matters
Walk right up in front of the statue and open your emote wheel. On PC that's E, and on controller it's Up on the D-pad. Here's the catch: "Yes" usually isn't on your active wheel. You'll need to customize the wheel, scroll through your emotes, and assign "Yes" to an open slot. Then face the statue and use it. The moment you do, a chest pops up beside you like you finally said the password, and it feels weirdly satisfying for such a small interaction.
What you get and why it's worth it
The chest is a quick hit of gold, XP, and consumables like elixirs, plus that extra Dry Steppes renown that adds up faster than you'd think when you're pushing for account-wide rewards. Don't expect guaranteed legendaries, but people do pull decent gear sometimes, and the bigger win is that you solved it yourself instead of following a trail of arrows. It's also a one-and-done per character, so if you're leveling alts, it's an easy stop to repeat while you're passing through, especially if you're also weighing whether to buy Diablo 4 gold to smooth out your upgrade costs mid-season.
