GFRP Construction Materials: Rebar, Profiles, and Innovation
GFRP construction materials have advanced significantly, moving beyond simple applications to become a recognized and specified solution for a variety of structural and non-structural uses. Beyond the well-established application of GFRP rebar, the market is seeing the emergence of other key products, including structural profiles, bridge components, and cladding systems . The market for GFRP products in construction was estimated at USD 4.89 billion in 2025 .
GFRP rebar remains the most prominent application in construction. Its ability to completely eliminate the risk of corrosion-induced spalling makes it a superior material for concrete reinforcement, particularly in infrastructure projects designed for a 100-year service life . GFRP structural profiles, including beams, channels, and angles, are used for lightweight framing in corrosive environments, replacing heavier, maintenance-intensive steel. Bridge components, such as bridge decks and pedestrian bridges, utilize GFRP's high strength and durability to create structures that are both long-lasting and easy to transport and erect.
Innovation in GFRP construction materials is ongoing, with a focus on developing stronger, more cost-effective products and expanding design codes. The American Concrete Institute (ACI) has published comprehensive guidelines for the design and construction of concrete structures reinforced with GFRP bars, providing engineering confidence and facilitating wider adoption . As the construction industry continues to prioritize sustainability and long-term value, GFRP materials are expected to capture an increasing share of the market.
