Ammonia Supply Chain China: Infrastructure, Surplus, and Exports
The ammonia supply chain in China is characterized by a massive and efficient domestic production network, currently dealing with a significant surplus that is turning the nation into a major exporter. The value chain is vertically integrated, with production hubs often located near coal resources. The logistics network, including pipeline, rail, and truck transport, is extensive, connecting production centers with agricultural and industrial demand centers.
The most significant development in the supply chain is the structural surplus and the resulting surge in exports . Domestic production capacity has grown faster than demand, creating a persistent oversupply. This has forced producers to seek international markets. The supply chain has adapted by expanding port infrastructure for liquid ammonia storage and transport, particularly in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi provinces. This infrastructure has been critical for the export boom, as it allows producers to efficiently reach global markets .
The export flow is being driven by strong economic incentives. Export prices of USD 550-650 per ton offer a significant profit margin over domestic costs of around RMB 2,400 per ton, creating a powerful arbitrage opportunity . Primary export destinations in the first half of 2026 included South Korea, India, Morocco, and Vietnam . This export dynamism is a key buffer for the oversupplied domestic market.
