Engineering Plastic Additives: Enhancing PET for High-Performance Applications
Engineering plastic additives are used to elevate the performance of PET, enabling its use in demanding applications beyond traditional packaging and textiles. These additives are designed to impart specific properties such as high impact resistance, flame retardancy, heat resistance, and improved mechanical strength. The use of PET in engineering plastics is growing, driven by its advantageous combination of properties, including good mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and processability, and the increasing demand for lightweight materials in automotive, electronics, and industrial applications.
Impact modifiers are a key class of engineering plastic additives for PET. They are used to improve the toughness and impact resistance of PET, making it suitable for demanding applications where brittleness is a concern. Reactive impact modifiers, which contain functional groups that react with the PET matrix, are often preferred for their ability to form a stable, well-dispersed phase, resulting in superior impact performance . Examples of such modifiers include core-shell impact modifiers like Paraloid™ EXM-2314 and reactive terpolymers like Lotader® AX8900 . In PBT (a polyester similar to PET) compounds, Lotader® AX8900T is efficient at increasing melt strength and, when combined with other copolymers, can improve impact resistance with limited viscosity increase .
Flame retardants are another important category of engineering plastic additives, particularly for applications in electronics and automotive components where fire safety is critical.
